Even the most devout animal lovers get sick and tired of picking up dog excrement from their lawns or in front of their homes or businesses. One town in northern Spain has decided to take matters into their own hands and find a solution to dog owners who leave their pet’s waste behind.
In the town of Hernani, the local council has created a “Canine CSI” unit to help deal with the community’s dog-waste problem. The municipality recently passed a bylaw that forces dog owners to register their animals DNA – dog-waste left around town can then be sent off for analysis at a local university and matched to the registered DNA.
Dog owners will be fined €300 (US435) if their dog is found to be leaving its waste around the community.
