Gap Goes Cage Free

E-mail Print

The Gap has joined a growing number of California companies in switching to cage-free eggs in their corporate cafeterias. Companies like Google, Yahoo! and Bon Appétit Management Company have all gone cage-free after learning about factory farming methods in the USA.

"The Humane Society of the United States applauds Gap for joining the national movement away from cruel battery cages," said Paul Shapiro, senior director of The HSUS' factory farming campaign. "It's hard to imagine a more miserable existence for a bird than being crammed in a cage so small..."

The USA practices some of the cruelest factory farming methods on the planet. In the US, more than 280 million hens are confined to battery cages with each hen having a space no bigger than a single sheet of paper, preventing a bird from moving around or spreading their wings.

How is this news? HSUS is not preventing cruelty, but rather encouraging people to be proud of cruelty by pretending that having the space to wings is a luxury we bestow upon animals. Actually, the opposite is true: preventing birds from spreading their wings is a cruelty we bestow upon animals, and "cage-free" hens are not treated very much better than caged ones.
