The Belgian town of Mouscron is running a campaign offering its residents free chickens to help reduce their household kitchen waste.
Mouscron is offering fifty free pairs of chickens to residents who have enough space to keep the hens in their gardens to act as living composters. Part of the deal is that residents must keep the chickens for two years, and agree to not eat them or give them away.
The campaign is designed to educate locals about alternative methods of household waste management including composting and feeding organic scraps to chickens.
Chickens make great living composters, but it is important that the hens receive proper care and adequate living conditions to flourish. The BBC News is reporting that Mouscron residents participating in the free chicken project will receive some instruction on basic chicken keeping.
