EU Adopts Seal Product Ban

E-mail Print

Despite the Canadian Government’s threats of action at the World Trade Organization, the EU has gone ahead with the ban on imports of Canadian seal products.

On July 27th, 2009 the ban on sales of all products derived from seals, including fur, meat and oil; was approved by EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels without the need for further debate, reported Reuters Canada.

The ban will take affect in the 2010 seal-hunting season but the ban does not include traditional hunts by Inuit people.

"There is a wonderful sense of accomplishment today after years of hard work," said Lesley O'Donnell, Director of IFAW EU in a statement. “We expect commercial sealing to continue its inevitable decline until it is wiped out once and for all."
