The Australian town of Broome recently voted unanimously to end its ties with sister-city Taiji, Japan because of the annual dolphin cull. Broome’s mayor, Graeme Campbell, said that they made the decision to end the historical relationship because the dolphin cull was unacceptable to the community.
The dolphin cull was recently exposed in the documentary The Cove, where a team of covert activists film the brutal slaughter. It is the first time the slaughter has ever been filmed and has resulted in considerable international outcry.
It is estimated that more than 23,000 dolphins are rounded up and taken into a secret cove. Some of the dolphins are captured and sold at high prices to marine parks and ‘swim with dolphin’ outfits while the rest are brutally slaughtered.
The community of Broome has been inundated with protest against the Broome-Taiji sister city relationship, reported AFP.
“We’ve had a tsunami of electronic and written protest to us, both nationally and internationally,” explained the mayor to AFP. “We had 5,000 emails in one day.”
