The City of Stockholm is coming under fire for culling rabbits, which are overrunning public parks, and then using their dead bodies as a fuel source. Each year, the city kills an estimated 3,000-6,000 rabbits and the bodies are frozen and then transported to a heating plant in Karlskoga, central Sweden. The dead rabbits are then incinerated and used to heat the homes of residents in the community of Värmland.
“Those who support the culling of rabbits surely think it’s good to use the bodies for a good cause. But it feels like they’re trying to turn the animals into an industry rather than look at the main problem,” Anna Johannesson of the Society for the Protection of Wild Rabbits told the Telegraph UK.
Animal rights activists would like to see a more humane solution to the annual cull.
