NASA will be undertaking radiation studies on monkeys. The experiments are designed to help NASA understand the radioactive environment of space and how it affects human bodies and their effects outside the earth’s magnetic shield. During the experiments, 18-28 squirrel monkeys will be irradiated.
The radiation exposure experiments will take place at NASA's Space Radiation Laboratory at the Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, according to Discovery News.
Space exploration has a long history of animal experiments including primates and dogs launched into space and various animal experiments on the ground to help scientists understand the effects of space travel on the human body.
