Amazing Shark Caesarean

Sharks in an aquarium.

Visitors to Tarlton's Underwater World in Auckland, New Zealand received an unexpected surprise when a pregnant shark was given an impromptu caesarean section from a fellow shark. The “midwife” shark bit the pregnant shark in her belly releasing four babies from a large stomach wound. After aquarium staff rescued the four babies and the mother they discovered four more baby sharks still alive in her belly.

Aquarist Fiona Davies, from Tarlton's Underwater World, told NZPA that the impromptu caesarean saved the lives of the baby sharks.

The shark caesarean section involved considerable skill as the ‘midwife’ shark was obligated to nip the pregnant shark in such a way to ensure the babies were let out without killing the mother or baby sharks.

The mother shark is now back in her tank after receiving stitches to sew up her caesarean wound.
