Have you seen a Pine Siskin or maybe a Snowy Owl in your backyard recently? Well, time to get involved in the largest bird-recording event in North America – the 13th annual Great Backyard Bird Count.
The coast-to-coast count takes place from February 12-15th, 2010 and encourages people across North America to record bird sightings in their backyards, local parks or wildlife refuges.
Last year, Great Backyard Bird Count participants submitted more than 93,600 reports online, creating the largest instantaneous snapshot of bird populations ever recorded.
The bird sightings submitted by the public assist researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Bird Studies Canada to learn more about bird population well-being.
“Taking part in the Great Backyard Bird Count is a great way to get outside with family and friends, have fun, and help birds—all at the same time," said Audubon spokesperson Judy Braus. "Even if you can identify a few species you can provide important information that enables scientists to learn more about how the environment is changing and how that affects our conservation priorities.”
