Good looks and a sweet disposition make a difference when you are fighting for your life in the animal world. But the humble and somewhat unsightly blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) has got it very tough indeed. This plump and depressive looking sea creature is currently under threat of extinction due to trawlers overfishing in Australian waters.
The blobfish, living at depths of up to 800m (2,625ft), is unfortunately located in the same waters where trawlers are fishing for lobster and crabs. The inedible blobfish often ends up as unwanted bycatch in the trawler nets. Scientists fear if something isn’t done soon, the blobfish may soon become extinct.
