More than 250 brightly painted baby elephant statues will make their debut on the streets of London, England in May 2010.

In a bid to raise awareness about the plight of the Asian elephant, UK-based charity Elephant Family asked big-name designers and artists to paint the baby elephant statues in the country’s largest public art campaign. Participating artists include Lulu Guinness, Diane von Furstenberg, HRH Prince Michael of Kent, Tommy Hilfiger and Isaac Mizrahi.

The elephant art project will be on display at various locations around London from May to June 2010. The charity hopes to raise £2 million (US$3 million).

Elephant Family also have an online petition asking governments to save the Asian elephant from extinction whose population now number only 25,000 – 35,000, down from 275,000 – 390,000 in only a hundred years.
