Canadian artist Katharine Harvey used more than 800 square feet (74.3m2) of recycled plastic to create the massive and stunning chandelier sculpture in Toronto’s Allen Lambert Galleria. The 21 x 15 x 15 ft (6.4 x 4.6 x 4.6m) site-specific sculpture was commissioned by Brookfield Properties Ltd. to commemorate Earth Week.
“By transforming plastic recyclable containers into a massive chandelier, the installation creates a provocative social commentary on the glut of plastic in consumer society,” explains the artist. “These banal cast-offs are used to depict a status symbol of luxury and opulence. Devoid of elegance or grace, the oversized metamorphosis may seem both wondrous and horrific.”
Harvey is a popular and innovative artist who often works with recycled plastic. She has exhibited her installations in a variety of venues across Canada since 2001. In 2008 Harvey received the People’s Choice Award at the Nuit Blanche Festival in Toronto for her 40 x 80 ft (12.2 x 24.4m) recycled plastic sculpture entitled Waterfall. She will also have a solo show at the MacLaren Art Centre in Barrie, Ontario, featuring a large–scale recycled plastic Waterfall, and a selection of recent acrylic paintings. The show runs from June 18th to August 31st, 2009.
