Disposable Fork & Spoon Art

E-mail Print

Japanese born, London-based architect and designer Daisuke Hiraiwa takes disposable plastic spoons, forks and even toothpicks, to create stunning contemporary artwork from common everyday objects.

“I think one of my design roles is to change the daily fixed values into positive senses,” explains the artist. “So I look for some material in local DIY stores.”

Elegant Stamen Chandeliers are made from painstakingly gluing thousands of toothpicks together to create sensually shaped chandeliers.

“I wanted to show organic flexible aggregation in stamen lighting,” Hiraiwa explains.

Working with the design of flowers for inspiration, the artist has also created sculptural pendant lighting made from plastic spoons that gently evoke the petals of a flower.

Hundreds of disposable knives and a shoal of fish for inspiration helped the artist create the installation Skin of Spaces for an exhibit in Milan in 2008.
