Have you ever wondered what a mere one second worth of America’s bottled water habit looks like? Watershed, an art installation consisting of 1,500 hundred empty plastic bottles, designed by MSLK, a New York City-based graphic design agency, will be on display at the Figment Art Festival on Governors Island in New York City from June 12-14.
“Watershed was developed in an effort to get the public to rethink choosing bottled water when we have the best quality drinking water coming right from our taps,” explains MSLK of the project. “Consisting of 1,500 empty bottles collected from the New York City area, the installation will visualize one second of US bottled water consumption.”
The project also highlights the ugly side of the bottled water industry; 50 billion bottles of water are bought each year, 80% end up in a landfill; 17 million barrels of oil are used in producing bottled water each year; and bottled water costs a 1,000 times more than tap water.
