In a workshop in South Yorkshire, England artist Bob Campbell (a.k.a. Stig) creates visually powerful recycled furniture sculpture coaxed from redundant mechanical and industrial parts.
The self-taught sculptor is an environmentalist who believes that everything can be reused, incorporating leather, wood, steel and rubber (but never plastic) into his one of a kind industrial furniture pieces.
Campbell uses parts scoured from the industrial region where he lives. South Yorkshire was once a region of England that was a centre for heavy engineering and steel production. The area experienced a dramatic decline in fortunes from the 1980's onwards and this change in fortune is evidenced in Campbell’s work.
"I make sophisticated sculptures that go far beyond their functional use. Every piece of work I produce takes its own form, each piece of material I use is re-claimed and re-used from industrial machinery that has now been discarded, by doing this I create a sculpture that has a use as well as an aesthetic beauty," explains the artist. “My work is not only a sculpture it is a piece of history that addresses the global need to re-use existing materials."
The independent artist rejects the conventional art sales model and retains tight control of how his work is exhibited. We are delighted we were given permission to include a sampling of his work on GreenMuze.
