The global changing attitudes towards plastic are reflected in the magnificent light installations from designers Lisa Foo and Mah Su Sim (LFSS). Created from recycled plastic bottles, the renowned designer duo has managed to create beauty out of discarded waste.
About a year ago, the designers decided to collaborate in an effort to creatively manifest their environmental responsibility and fashion light sculptures from unwanted plastic water bottles.
“In an effort to create a visual statement to the problem of plastic waste, we attempted to repurpose the ubiquitous plastic mineral water bottles into unconventional yet practical light sculptures,” explain the designers. “The crafting processes employed emphasizes the inherent quality of the material and, by applying only the most basic methods of manual crafting skills using common stationery and craft tools, we aspire to generate worth and ethereal charm out of the mundane plastic bottles.”
As a landscape designer, Mah Su Sim draws inspiration mostly from natural shapes, forms and patterns found in nature, while Lisa Foo, an architect, models her lights after creatures of the deep sea. The result is stunning light sculptures that celebrate nature’s designs.
