Straw is an incredibly versatile green building material. So versatile, in fact, that a UK ice-cream maker uses it to sculpt enormous straw statues.
Each year, the Snugbury’s Ice Cream Company, based in Cheshire, England creates a different sculpture to help raise money for the Kids Charity Company. This year’s sculpture is a rendition of London’s famous Big Ben monument at the Houses of Parliament. The straw bale Big Ben, made from 500 straw bales, is over 22 metres (72 feet) high and weighs more than 2 tons.
Past monuments have included windmills, satellite dishes, Russian rockets, and even a replica of London’s Millennium Wheel.
