The shortlist for the prestigious 2009 Prix Pictet has been announced. The annual photography award highlights the best in photography and sustainability, drawing attention to both the beauty and vulnerability of the natural environment. This year the theme is Earth.
Sponsored by the Geneva bank Pictet & Cie, the Prix Pictet follows a mandate to use the power of photography to communicate important messages to a global audience. Photographers captured striking images of strip mining in Venezuela, massive garbage dumps in Mexico, the Yangtze River in China, oil exploration in Niger, and Japan’s Mount Fuji.
The 2009 Prix Pictet Shortlist: Darren Almond, Christopher Anderson, Sammy Baloji, Edward Burtynsky, Andreas Gursky, Naoya Hatakeyama, Nadav Kander, Ed Kashi, Abbas Kowsari, Yao Lu, Edgar Martins and Chris Steele-Perkins.
The winner of this year’s US$93,290 Prix Pictet will be announced in Paris in October 2009.
