American artist Andrew Junge created the Styrofoam Hummer when he was the artist-in-residence at San Francisco’s Recycling & Disposal Inc. Using Styrofoam scavenged from the dump, Junge sculptured a 17ft (5.2m) long, 6ft (1.8m) high and 8ft (2.4m) wide Hummer to highlight waste and consumption in North American culture.
The artist explains his work:
I wish to examine and re-contextualize found objects and materials, to invest them with new life, and to sanctify - or at least acknowledge their presence in the world. My aim is to turn the lowest form of human productivity, trash, into the highest, art - a kind of modern alchemy.
Each year, San Francisco artists have the option of applying for the super cool artist-in-residence position at the San Francisco’s Recycling & Disposal Inc. There are usually 4-8 artists selected each year to raise awareness about recycling and conservation through their artwork.
Although Andrew Junge was the artist in residence in 2005, he is currently still our favorite.
