In a bid to raise awareness about the depletion of the rainforest, ten mammoth trees stumps are making the journey from Ghana to London and then onward to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen as part of the Ghost Forest exhibit created by Oxford-based artist Angela Palmer.
The stumps are from legally logged Mahogany, Denya, Dehuma, Celtis, Wawa, Hyedua, and Dahoma trees from the Suhuma forest reserve in Western Ghana and serve as a visual representation of the deforestation that is taking place in forests around the globe.
“Many observers will see the stumps as beautiful sculptural objects; others will perhaps see the installation as a scene of devastation,” explains the artist of her work. “For others the installation may represent an overt piece of political activism - a call to arms. I am equally comfortable with all responses.”
Ghost Forest will be on display in Trafalgar Square in London until November 22, 2009 before traveling to Copenhagen for the UN Cop15 Climate Change Conference in December.
