E. coli by Luke Jerram.

British artist and inventor Luke Jerram creates stunning glass sculptures of lethal pathogens, including HIV, H1N1, SARS and E. coli as part of his collection Glass Microbiology. The transparent glass sculptures, magnified more than one million times the actual size of the virus, were created in collaboration with virologists from the University of Bristol and with several glass artists and glassblowers.

Artificially coloured image by David Sayer, Wellcome Trust.

“These transparent glass sculptures were created to contemplate the global impact of each disease and to consider how the artificial coloring of scientific imagery affects our understanding of phenomena,” explains Jerram’s artist statement.

SARS Corona Virus by Luke Jerram.

Jerram’s 3-D glass sculptures explore the tension between the artwork’s beauty and what they represent, contrasted against the impact the virus has on humanity.
