French artist and composer Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has a new installation opening at the Barbican Centre in London featuring birds that play electric guitars – one small bird even managed to rock a solo (although we suspect it probably just wanted the twig caught in the guitar strings).
The installation involves a walk through an aviary of zebra finches furnished with electric guitars and other instruments. The birds create music as they go about their daily routines, creating a live soundscape of both bird song and electric guitars.
As interesting as Boursier-Mougenot’s artistry maybe, a more avian-friendly rendition would not involve captive animals and would have been performed outdoors with an instrument more congruent with natural bird song.
Céleste Boursier-Mougenot’s installation continues from 27 February to 23 May 2010.
