Mexican artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer took over Melbourne’s Federation Square during the Light in Winter Festival with his stunning solar art installation. Dubbed the Solar Equation, the 14m (46ft) diameter (100 million times smaller than the real thing) solar sun installation features a helium filled balloon with light projectors creating a dazzling display of solar animated flares and sunspots.

“While pertinent environmental questions of global warming, drought, or UV radiation might arise from the contemplation of this piece, Solar Equation intends to likewise evoke romantic environments of ephemerality, mystery and paradox, such as those from Blake or Goethe,” explains the artist’s website.
