The inspiring tenacity of trees in the face of extremely adverse circumstances is the focus of a series of haunting images by American photographer Colleen Mullins.

Her Elysium series is comprised of tree images from New Orleans where Hurricane Katrina destroyed more than 70% of the urban canopy. Mullins’ photographs highlight the relationship between trees and the community.

“And we seemingly hold a cultural belief that if it is an Eden we planted, we have eminent domain over the territory it occupies. While sometimes their deformities can be perceived as comical, the impact of this loss will be faced by New Orleans residents returning home for years to come,” explains the artist of her work.
