Dutch designer Diederik Schneemann creates vases and lamps from recycled plastic flip-flops in a bid to raise awareness about reusing old materials. Dubbed A Flip Flop Story, his collection, created in conjunction with UniquEco Foundation, collects the discarded plastic shoes from beaches in Kenya while also providing jobs to the locals who collect and sand the footwear.

“They are discoloured, worn, torn, patched up and eventually tossed away or lost. After a long trip through Asia or Africa they end up in sewers and in the ocean,” explains the artist of his project. “Then they are washed up on the shores of Eastern Africa. There they are found, collected, and eventually reclaimed.”

A Flip Flop Story is at Ventura Lambrata in Milan until April 17, 2011.
