Plastic Bottle Lampshades

E-mail Print

Waste plastic drink bottles are creatively upcycled into decorative lighting by British artist Sarah Turner.  Three types of lampshades have been developed in the ReDesign Lampshades' range and they reuse varying numbers of drinks bottles.  The largest, ‘Cola 30’ and a smaller version ‘Cola 10’, are so named as they re-use 30 and 10 Cola bottles respectively.

“The bottles are collected, cleaned, sandblasted and then with some clever cutting they are transformed into decorative shapes, totally unrecognizable from their original state, explains Turner, of her ReDesign Lampshades. “They are then screwed into the inner shade, which is made from recycled card and secured with their own bottle top.” The result is stunning ceiling, table or floor lights made from recycled plastic Cola bottles.

Considering that only an estimated 5.5% of plastic waste drinks bottle are actually recycled in the UK, Turner works to find a creative use for unwanted plastic bottles and simultaneously save some space in the landfill.

The lampshades are competing against 25 other designs for the title of Concept Product of the Year at the Ideal Homes Show in the UK. Show your support and vote.
