A plan by BC Hydro, together with certain financial interests, which has been hatched in secrecy, with zero public consultation, is being sprung on an uninformed population and now threatens our right to choose to live in safe environments. Gulf Islanders for Safe Technology, an ad hoc group formed to oppose “smart metering”, urges residents to examine Hydro’s ill-conceived plan to force a wireless electric power meter radiating at roughly 100 times the strength of a cell phone, 24/7, on every home and workplace.

This is part of a continent-wide “smart grid” plan whereby radiating “smart meters” are being installed on all gas, water and electrical services. Based on what can be understood from the little that Hydro admits about their end of this plan, as well as on the bad experiences of victims of this wireless metering technology in areas where it has already been deployed, it is obvious that citizens now need to work together to bring a halt to the entire program until it can be shown to be safe.

And what better place to halt deployment of this unsafe technology than here, where Gulf Islanders have long understood the need to take action to defend the environment? There is great power in an informed citizenry and this is what we need to become once again in order to protect our community. It is essential to get informed and to see the smart plan stopped here.

Meanwhile, it is crucial to register refusal of smart meters with the BC government and with BC Hydro. In addition, it would be wise, although illegal, to physically to prohibit all access to the meter itself, else you will find it changed to a radiating type without your permission.

The issue is that with no public review, no democratic choice, no documented benefit to customers or the environment, and no energy or dollar savings to be gained by the public, BC Hydro and Fortis are to bill taxpayers over $1 billion for a completely new, province-wide wireless electrical “Smart Grid” to be set up by the end of 2012. The Gulf Islands have been chosen as one of the first test sites for a plan that some scientists and researchers warn may harm public health.

No more will meters be read by people, but by a new wireless data transfer system. Alarmingly, this means massive increases in our everyday electromagnetic radiation (EMR) exposures. This is of great concern as the exposure to radiofrequency and microwave radiation is involuntary, continuous and harmful. This will affect all citizens adversely, especially the growing cohort of EHS (electrical hypersensitivity syndrome) sufferers. EHS is recognized by the WHO (World Health Organization), the Canadian Human Rights Commission, and by many EU (European Union) governments. Moreover, as is the case with any contaminant, non-ionizing radiation will adversely affect children, the elderly, the immune-compromised and those with medical implants, pacemakers, insulin pumps, etc., most seriously.

Despite claims by Health Canada and BC Hydro to the contrary, findings of ‘independent’ scientists – those not controlled by and beholden to industry or it’s government assistants – indicate that EMR used by wireless technologies in general, and smart meter emissions in particular, are dangerous. Expert bodies from around the world, including the EU Parliament decry the false thermal standards, such as that being used here, and are calling for safer biologically-based exposure standards.

In a surprising admission, in a taped interview, “smart metering” spokesman Dr. John Blatherwick, admits that Canada’s ‘Code Six’ radiation guidelines are “grossly out of date” and are all “based on heat”.  In other words, the professional expert used to defend the smart plan has admitted publicly that the very guidelines used to claim that EMR emissions from smart meters are safe, are based on a premise that is false – an incredible admission! Therefore, ironically, the “what doesn’t heat you doesn’t hurt you” theory is discredited even by those who use these widely ridiculed “thermal” guidelines to assure us that “smart” meters and the WiMAX transmitters used to collect and relay data are safe!

The Clean Air Act specifies that conventional power meters can be replaced with new wireless types “without the consent of the owner”. There is to be no public scrutiny, since ominously the Act strips the BC Utilities Commission of their power to review this massive, overly expensive and risky mega project.

With many thousands of health complaints being registered wherever radiating meters are installed, and with many citizens committed to refuse this dangerous technology, one wonders why would the BC Liberals allow this to continue? One reason for this massively expensive and risky program is that it represents the creation of a vast new market sector estimated worldwide at roughly $45 trillion. Were BC Hydro and the former Campbell administration simply doing their part to establish huge business opportunities, cloaked in green language, for the market benefit of certain BC interests?

A March 2011 TheTyee.ca article “First to Profit From $1 Billion Smart Meter Program: Liberal Insiders”, gives some insight. It explains how this massive change for the worst has all been quietly arranged with questionable business and political activity, with government insiders standing to make millions, while the public has been kept uninformed.

“Smart meters” serve corporate efficiency regrettably at the expense of public health and that of the natural world. The primary rationale for radiation meters is to even out periods of peak consumption with those of little consumption. There are better ways to do this that do not require wireless systems. As seen in California, Ontario and elsewhere, wireless “smart meters” increase electricity bills, invade privacy, cause interference even in non-wireless appliances, and make people sick.

These systems are anything but smart. They are fraught with flaws; they ruin power quality and power efficiency for the customer, and for the power grid as a whole, by causing harmonic distortion, or ‘dirty power’ that actually increases Hydro bills. This problem is in addition to RF (radio frequency) radiation emitted by the meters to connect with the grid. The ‘dirty power’ signal flows into houses and neighbourhoods, causing harm to health and interference to other systems.

Smart meters burden taxpayers with huge debt and customers with painful rate hikes. Alarmingly, cyber experts warn that they can be hacked into and that intimate information about our lives can be misused. A U.S. cyber security firm InGuardians tested five different brands of “smart meters” and they were all easily hacked into, meaning that personal electrical use is open information to whoever has motive and means.

Our new group Gulf Islanders for Safe Technology, recommends that citizens demand an open, independent public inquiry regarding what our publicly-owned utility is up to with this secretive development. Meanwhile, it is important to write to BC Hydro and register our refusal of the “smart” meter, and consider preventing easy access to our existing meters.

Jim Quail, Executive Director of the BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre, indicates that Hydro’s business plans and putative energy savings estimates are highly questionable. Quail called on Rich Coleman, the new Energy Minister, to order BC Hydro to abandon the program, stating that: “Someone has to tell Hydro to stop signing contracts and kill smart metering.”

There are many groups and individuals opposing this rush for spoils in the hot “smart” wireless market sector. To preserve and protect these beautiful islands we need to collectively say “NO” to smart metering. And we need to say it soon before it is too late.

Well-said; I'm glad that the environmental community is starting to catch on to this issue. Keep up the good work.

Chris - You are way off base and an alarmist... you would think someone who promotes Green would support ways to reduce energy consumption. Instead you are putting insane statements out there that have nothing to do with the facts ; "This is of great concern as the exposure to radio frequency and microwave radiation is involuntary, continuous and harmful." You should look at several independent studies that prove this statement completely false.

People like you actually harm the green initiatives since people read garbage like your article and then they are turned off to good green ideas. They look at you as a nut-case who avoids the truth.

Are you a writer for big-coal? I've never seen such a blatant attempt to propagandize an important development to help conserve our use of energy and need for new coal power plants. You have any sources? Way to latch on to the misinformed "Bakersfield Effect."

To the so-called environmentalists attacking this very accurate article, I say the following: 1. The environmental groups who lobbied the UN to reduce greenhouse gases specifically asked for humane alternatives. Smart meters are inhumane. We cannot kill and harm people, animals, wildlife, and the environment in more damaging ways to attempt to solve global warming. Smart meters are not only harmful, they are torturous to live with and ruin all quality of life for those made ill. The rest are just sitting ducks, as they wait for cancers and ill health to follow.

My advice: fence off your meters, lock them up, say no and mean it. Follow what northern Californians are doing and get local gov't to ban the meters. March in the streets if necessary. I have two of these meters and they are a living hell. Industry (BP and others) shills need not reply. Uninformed pseudo-environmentalists need not attack.

2. Question: Is BP the same company that destroyed the Gulf of Mexico with the mismanagement of their oil rigs? Would anyone in their right minds trust that company (or another like them)? It is all about the money. Ripping off the public and suckering the so-called environmentalists to help them. Maybe THEY are also getting a piece of the action? Donations to their environmental group? Grants? Yes, this has happened in the USA. Case in point Environmental Defense Fund, very misguided and with smart grid projects.

To those touting Smart Meters will are a 'green initiative' that will save energy, money, and of course perfectly safe; I suggest people read the latest from Ontario to gauge how effective smart meters have been there. The fact is behaviors change energy consumption, not the meters themselves. The reality is far more could be done splitting up a billion tax dollars to the public to help produce a 'greener' environment with such things as: unplugging appliances/devices not in use; insulating windows and walls; turning of circuits at night; grants for energy efficient appliances, solar panels, and geothermal heating, etc; doing without unnecessary features on appliances that require more energy; require the telecommunication industry to share infrastructure and reduce the number of transmitters that collectively contribute an enormous amount to global warming as well as using a lot of energy! If we all gave up our wireless devices for even a few days of the week, think about how much energy could be saved as well as the benefit to health and environment.

Now that would be progressive towards a greener world.

Smart meters are not green, but reducing energy is. I don't understand why BC Hydro is spending billions on making a device that tells people what they are consuming when our bills already do this. Why not spend all that money on educating people about reducing consumption and invest the rest in renewable energy sources? I don't see why these wireless devices are being rammed down our throats with a heaping of PR BS saying they are green.

I think your statement that smart meters are "radiating at roughly 100 times the strength of a cell phone" is not quite correct. What nuclear expert, Daniel Hirsch said was that the radiation exposure from smart meters is about 100x that from cell phones. This, he said, was due to the whole body, 24/7 exposure from smart meters as opposed to the intermittent, head-directed exposure from cell phones.

According to information from Itron, the BC smart meter manufacturer, the relative power density (which could be described as "strength", I suppose) is 300-100,000x greater for a cell phone held to the head than for a smart meter 10 ft away.

"which has been hatched in secrecy, with zero public consultation"

Come on! That's a ridiculous claim you can say about anything when they don't ask you for your opinion.
(I ctrl-x everything else I was going to say as this article speaks for itself)

Thank you for this article, Chris. Your information is correct and accurate. We all need to shed light and create awareness on the dangers of (not so) Smart meters and EMF radiation in general.

Although I am not hugely concerned by the radio signals emanating from a smart meter, I'm not anti-green. In fact, I'm a raging environmentalist setting up to go completely off grid--but I still believe you are a total moron if you think Smart Meters are being installed for any other reason than greed. Wake up, SM promoters. Electric companies want smart meters to eliminate large numbers of jobs (meter readers) and to analyse usage data so they can jack up the rates during peak demand. Your bill, despite the savings by cutting jobs, will go up. This is exactly what has happened everywhere these things are installed. It's called greenwashing.

The Aug 7, 2011 comment by Vivacorporategiants (Can't say I understand correlation between this name and your comments...) -- finally someone actually voiced the real reason for these. The hype to try and convince the public of their benefit is just so much marketing/sales pitch. Don't for a second think the power companies would spend that kind of money without the real probability of increasing their bottom line. Has nothing to do with Green or saving energy.
In checking website of my power company -- it indicates customers have no choice to accept or refuse installation of smart meter. Afterall it is their equipment. If it is to be stopped, it will have to be through local and/or state government as people combine to say "NO."

Today, after receiving my new hydro bill -- I was obliged to spend a large portion of my day finding out WHY my family's hydro bill has increased by more than fifty (50) percent ... even though (we are NOT) using any more electricity than before!!
In the process of learning all about our new 'SMART' METER recently forced on us by Ontario hydro, I discovered to my great concern, dismay, and disgust - that these so called smart meters are (only smart) for the revenue hungry, ie: (BLOOD SUCKING) government that is FORCING them on us.

After gathering considerable information I also discovered that these (wireless) 'smart meter' devices are CONSIDERED by many knowledgeable sources TO BE A CONSIDERABLE HEALTH HAZARD TO EVERY PERSON, & every PET, IN EVERY HOUSEHOLD, (and in fact every neighborhood) WHERE THEY ARE INSTALLED!

Apart from the above ominous facts I learned today however -- I concluded my day's research with the realization, that these SMART METERS WORK (EXACTLY) AS CONCERNS THE GOVERNMENT WHICH HAS DECREED THEIR USE.... AND THAT IS TO MAKE (US) PAY THEM MORE, and MORE, and MORE OF OUR HARD EARNED MONEY.It would seem THAT is their main intent, and apparently NOTHING ELSE MATTERS TO THEM.

PLUS, it seems we are to have ABSOLUTELY NO SAY WHAT-SO-EVER IN THE MATTER - SINCE THE POWERS THAT BE HAVE COMMANDED IT!

To my chagrin I also heard that they have just SNEAKILY APPROVED a NEW "SMART METER ENTITY" SERVICING TAX!!! Yes, indeedy... good people the "DALTON GANG" strikes again!!!
