Using existing agricultural building components to provide an energy efficient and sustainable way in which to enclose space is the latest architectural concept from designer Michael Jantzen. The Eco-Shell Multi-Use Building System is based on the use of existing recycled steel arch buildings commonly used in the agricultural industry. By bolting the recycled steel arches together; large vaulted sections of covered space are created.
Flexible photovoltaic cells are mounted to the curved surface of the building as well as fitting solar hot water and space heating systems to provide sustainable energy sources. Rainwater is gathered off the corrugated steel roof. Floor systems can be constructed from concrete or rammed earth.
Potential uses for the Eco-Shell Multi-Use Building System include visitors’ centers, office buildings, clinics, restaurants, retail facilities, wineries and emergency housing.
