Rising oceans are becoming more of a concern and designers and architects around the globe are meeting the challenge of creating design solutions for a rapidly changing world. American designer E. Kevin Schopfer has created the sustainable Boston Arcology (BOA) – a floating city designed to provide living space for more than 15,000 people.

The BOA development will be located in the waters off Boston, eliminating the need for cars by providing all the amenities of a small city including housing, offices, shops, restaurants and even a city hall. Transport within the city will be pedestrian-only with select areas featuring moving walkways and electric train carriers.

The carbon neutral development includes wind turbines, photovoltaic systems and harbor-based water turbines for energy harvesting; sky gardens will provide natural heating/cooling systems and an advanced water catchment and gray water treatment facilities.
