Modeled after the strong roots of a Sidra Tree, the Qatar Convention Center, designed by Yamasaki Architects, with more than 3,700m2 (39,800 sq.ft) of solar panels, is seeking LEED Gold Certification.

The three level convention facility will generate about 12.5% of its electricity from solar energy as well as feature LED lighting and water-efficient fixtures.

“The tree is a symbol of strength and growth, serving as an icon to the people of Qatar as well as the emblem of the Qatar Foundation,” explains Yamasaki Architects of the design.

The 177,000m2 (1,905,000 sq.ft) structure will have a final estimated price tag of US$720 million dollars (€522M) and is expected to open in 2011.
