The stunning Water Purification Skyscraper in Jakarta, created by Indonesian designers Rezza Rahdian, Erwin Setiawan, Ayu Diah Shanti and Leonardus Chrisnantyo, recently placed second in eVolo’s 2010 Skyscraper Competition.
The Water Purifying Skyscraper concept was designed as a solution to the very real need to restore the polluted Ciliwung River back to its pristine state and provide clean water for Jakarta’s residents. Dubbed the Ciliwung Recovery Program (CRP), the system entails transporting the Ciliwung River water through the building into a filtration system where garbage and contaminants are removed, with all organic waste being reconfigured into fertilizer.

The purified water is then redistributed to the Ciliwung River through underground capillary pipes and by spraying the purified water through the skin of the building. The water movement is also designed to raise the humidity in the building and trigger the growth of plants and create a new living ecosystem.
“CRP’s ecosystems will create a good microclimate for Jakarta, as well as a response to the loss of many open green spaces around the world that leads to global warming,” explain the designers of their project.
The Water Purifying Skyscraper utilizes wind and solar energy to power the buildings.
