The Valdrade Skyscraper Eco-System.

The Valdrade Skyscraper Eco-System, created by Belgium architects Axel Cailteux, Céline Hautfenne, Julie Jeuwels and Delphine Termote, is addresses the monofunctionality of buildings in Manhattan.

Valdrade’s unique concept design, created for eVolo’s 2010 Skyscraper Competition, focuses on density, sustainability and diversity. Divided into different levels comprised of upper and lower cities, the Valdrade design proposes that the ‘…lower city parasites the ecosystem while the upper city feeds it by drawing a green vegetable and permeable layer between the two cities’.

Powered by alternative energy, the building includes a photovoltaic building skin and wind turbines for electricity production, wastewater purification, compost systems, plug-in generation and methane gas harvesting from waste.

Valdrade’s designers describe the elaborate interconnected eco-system as resulting in '…someone’s wastes become another’s raw materials and sources of energy'.

The Valdrade Skyscraper received a Special Mention in eVolo’s 2010 Skyscraper Competition.
