With theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking’s recent proclamations that humans need to “abandon Earth” if they are going to survive, it seems like a good time to explore options for space colonies.

In the 1970s, NASA's Ames Research Center had artists render concept designs for futuristic space settlements capable of housing 10,000 people. See all the designs at NASA Space Settlements.

“Our only chance of long term survival, is not to remain inward looking on planet Earth, but to spread out into space. We have made remarkable progress in the last hundred years. But if we want to continue beyond the next hundred years, our future is in space,” explained Hawking in a Big Think Experts interview.
