With more than 1700sq.m (18,300sq.ft) of sloping green roof space, Swedish architectural firm BIG’s 8 House is an example of contemporary green architectural innovations. Copenhagen’s moss-sedum covered 8 House, in conjunction with green roof contractor Veg Tech, recently won the 2010 Scandinavian Green Roof Award.

Various moss species cover the long sloping roof surface, descending eleven floors to the edge of a canal in Oerestad South, while the interior courtyard offers an unobstructed view of the protected open spaces of Kalvebod Faelled.

The 60,000sq.m (645,000sq.ft) mixed‐use development is designed in the form of a figure 8 (hence the name) with the green spaces on the roof and within the courtyard strategically placed to reduce the urban heat island effect as well as providing visual relief for the inhabitants.

“The parts of the green roof that remain were seen by the client as integral to the building as they are visible from the ground. These not only provide the environmental benefits that we all know come from green roofs, but also add to the visual drama and appeal of the sloping roofs and rooftop terrace in between”, explains Bjarke Ingels of BIG.
