A sustainable crematorium is the focus of a new project by Danish architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Nestled in a forest setting, the Forest Crematorium features grass and wild flower covered green roofs with several pedestrian paths and one for vehicle traffic. The Forest Crematorium will be located behind the existing Asplunds Crematorium in Stockholm, Sweden.

“The slightly offset cruciform allows the landscape to rise in the form of four flopping green roofs encircling the intimate clearing,” explains the BIG website. “ Beneath the sloping roofs, four interconnected spaces accommodate the four elements of the of cremation process in a single loop: from the coffin loading and storage area, to the cremation area, on to the ash handling and urn storage.”
