The question of what to do with the problem of tent waste generated by absent-minded or careless campers and festival attendees has been answered via an ingenious design solution by Canadian born designer Vanessa Harden. The UK-based designer created the biodegradable Future Tents Project, in conjunction with Do The Green Thing, to encourage people to cut down on their tent trash.
Constructed from cardboard and embedded with local flower seeds, the foldable tent comes equipped with biodegradable tent pegs made from potatoes. The exterior of the tent is coated in beeswax to prevent leaking while you use it for your camping trip.
“For less than £20 (US$33, €23) one can get their hands on a tent that will provide shelter for a weekend but then it gets left behind. Abandoned. Put to landfill. Complete waste,” explains the artists’ website of her project. “Since we could not easily change people’s habits, the solution would have to be a tent that could be left at the site, and cost less to buy than the conventional tent found on the market.”
