With the number of climate change refugees expected to increase, emergency housing will become more and more necessary in the coming years. Michael McDaniel, a senior designer at frog design, recently debuted his green Reaction Housing System, a rapid response, emergency housing system.
The Reaction System can scale its response from a single family’s needs to an entire region whose population has been displaced with mass deployments. The emergency housing system is designed to be easily transported from a storage facility to a response site and be set up in a matter of hours.
Core system components are flat packed to provide the most storage and transportation options, while allowing quick setup without the need for tools or machinery. The shelter units are light enough that as little as four people can lift and position them on site. The units can be individually set up or assembled in a row.
The Reaction System is designed to be used over and over again. When the disaster or housing need is over, core system components can be broken down, hosed out, and shipped back to their storage facilities to await the next demand. The core system components are designed for long shelf lives with little maintenance required during storage periods since the mechanical systems are minimal.
The shelter units are made from recyclable materials such as aluminum for the structural components and a plastic composite skin.
