Imagine a home that is affordable, good for the environment and covered in pink polka dots. Sound too good to be true? Well, the Conhouse 2+ transportation container houses from Slovenia architect Jure Kotnik are designed to be the perfect green lowcost weekend home.
The innovative architect created the ConHouse system of utilzing small-size housing container units. The 2+ weekend houses include ground plans, carefully selected materials, a well-lit interior and the customized outer appearance of individual units. Despite all its perks, ConHouse remains a low cost housing option.
The 2+ weekend house is one of the smallest units in the ConHouse system. Two 20 foot ISO containers demonstrate how a minimal number of containers combined in an innovative fashion can offer fresh yet functional architectural solutions. Container units are stacked together perpendicular to each other on two levels.
The upper container provides a projecting roof above the entrance as well as sheltering the back terrace. The ceiling of the bottom container is also the terrace on the first floor. The system’s modular nature enables containers to be added to or subtracted from the compound as needed, so the ConHouse can grow or contract depending on the needs of the individual home-owner.
Although it might not be evident at first glance, building with transportation containers is an environmentally friendly construction material option. The containers are light-weight and their mobile nature enables the home to disappear as fast as it arrived, leaving the construction site practically untouched and enabling nature's previous condition to be easily restored.
At the end of their usefulness, the steel containers can be recycled into other steel products so avoiding the cradle-to-grave problem with most buildings.
