The Heden community design concept is an innovative 10,000 person green community proposed for an area of parking lots and football fields in the center of Gothenburg, Sweden. The Kjellgren Kaminsky Architecture firm has designed a sustainable vision for a multi-functional community with green roofs, allotment gardens, parks, apartments, shops, offices and sports facilities.
The sustainable housing is designed to replicate hills with grass roofs that can be walked upon. Small trails wander up the house hills to picnic spots with views of Gothenburg. The roofs also hold allotment gardens and small parks. The community proposal combines a lot of space for parks and open spaces, combining ecological planning with pleasant living environments.
The grass roofs will absorb rainwater that can be purified and reused as household water. The buildings will be well insulated for low energy consumption. The car-free Heden concept community will connect to the surrounding urban grid via continuous walkways and cycle paths. An underground car park will be constructed under the community to supply parking for the Heden community and visitors to the city centre. Since the Heden community will be situated close to existing public transportation, the residents have the option of living a carfree life.
The Heden community project is part of a final thesis from Daniel Andersson at Jönköping University, investigating the theme of parametric design. Fredrik Kjellgren and Joakim Kaminsky supervised the project.
