The recent Ice & Snow Furniture Raised From Lake Mendota installation, from sustainable artist and designer Hongtao Zhou, a University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate student, was made to raise awareness about climate change. Handmade with natural resources and designed for the local climate, the Ice & Snow Furniture sculpture is a great example of sustainable design.
“They connect the lake, the land, the air and the people and complete a sustainable life cycle with minimum environmental impact,” explains Hongtao Zhou. “The climate furniture raises awareness that we can make a sustainable world without a negative impact.”
It took Hongtao Zhou more than a week to complete the installation working about six hours a day. Frequent breaks were necessary due to the freezing temperatures. “Following the weather changes, the furniture will melt back into the lake and become a part of the water body again and complete their beautiful green life cycle,” explains Hongtao Zhou.
