It's Showertime

E-mail Print

Are you a waterhog? Someone who runs the water when brushing their teeth, flushes the toilet after every visit? And the shower? Are you one of those people who likes to take 15-minute showers?

According to New Internationalist Magazine, the average resident in Gambia uses 4.5 litres of water per day and the average American uses about 500 litres a day. Currently, more than 1.1 billion people are without access to clean water. Time to cut down on our water use.

Showertime is a new water conservation product – not too high-tech yet offering a simple and affordable solution to reducing water waste. The water smart device is a simple, battery operated, five-minute timer with a blue and red lighting sequence. During your shower, the lights change from blue to red and flashes red during the last 30 seconds, allowing individuals to easily monitor the duration of their shower.

Considering more than 20% of household water use takes place n the shower, a 3-minute reduction in shower time, from the average 8 to 5 minutes could save an estimated 6-15 gallons of water per shower per person per day.

Showertime reports that a family of four could save up to 15,000 gallons of water annually by cutting back on their shower durations. A Showertime device costs about $3.50 and less than $2 for bulk orders.
