Designed by New York architect Jeffrey McKean, the Modesthouse combines sustainable building practices, green energy systems, and a choice of materials and finishes, to create an innovative and very attractive eco-house kit.
The 2200 square foot (204 square meter) frame and panel kit home, made from Forest Steward Certified (FSC) lumber, offers enough space for 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and an open kitchen. The generous use of glass allows homeowners to keep a connection with the surrounding landscape.
The Modesthouse offers a range of eco-options including heat pump systems, hot water radiant flooring, photovoltaic cells, rainwater harvesting and green roofs.
The kit home utilizes structural insulated panels (SIPs) providing an R-value of 42 for the roof and floors. Modesthouse foundations are constructed from a pier type system that reduces the impact on the landscape and cuts down on the amount of cement used on the project.
A Modesthouse costs an estimated $US250 per square foot. The Modesthouse company has a certified assembly team that completes the foundations, structure, exterior envelope, kitchen cabinets and interior finishes.
Future projects may be able to obtain LEED certification.
