With the effects of climate change becoming increasingly prevalent, the consensus is that more and more people are going to be on the move in search of resources, work and safety. To help individuals prepare for a nomadic existence we have compiled a selection of our favorite examples of portable green housing.
The Mobile Mini House
The Mobile Mini House is a design solution for providing small housing options for the modern day traveller. Originally conceived for travelling telecommuters, the Mobile Mini House is designed for quick and easy set-up. The innovative expandable mobile home concept opens up when stationary to provide separate areas designed for living-room space, kitchen and office space.
Urban Nomad Housing
Under the brand Urban Nomads, German designer Winfried Baumann focuses on creating design solutions for people on the move. Baumann designs emphasize mobility, housing, provisions, locomotion and affordability. The most comprehensive design is his Instant Housing project that includes housing options for homeless people, nomadic priests, campers, business people, and travellers. The various mobile home options can be carried on your back, packed up like a suitcase, or wheeled behind you on a bicycle.
Tiny House Company
Jay Shafer, owner of Tumbleweed Tiny House Company, has built a successful business providing people with tiny but exquisitely made houses, including both permanent small houses and tiny houses on wheels that can be towed behind your vehicle.
“The average American house spews out more than 18 tons of greenhouse gasses each year and adds about 7 tons of construction waste to the local landfill. If you're building a new house, the greenest thing you can do is build it small. The days of calling every 4,000 square foot house for two "sustainable" are over,” explains Shafer.
Rolling Eco-Camper
Slovakian architects Tomas Zacek and Igor Zacek have come up with a unique house design that manages to combine a love of travel with environmentally sustainable design and functionality. The 25m2 Rolling Stone Camper, designed by Nice Architects Ltd., is based on the traditional Romany Caravans used by nomadic peoples. The architects used the caravans for inspiration, but added their own modern eco-twists.
Designed to accommodate a minimum of two people or a maximum of six in an emergency, each unit has a bedroom with a double bed, small closet, toilet, shower and sink. Each unit contains different energy system options – wind turbines or solar panels. The units also have a water reservoir and bathtub combination area on the roof and a grey water treatment facility under the floor of the caravan.
Portable Tent Jacket
Dual-purpose items make a big difference in reducing unnecessary consumption as well as being more convenient than dragging around multiple things when one might suffice. American design student, Justin Gargasz, has designed an innovative home that you wear on your back. His jacket/tent design – Vessel – helps address homelessness and will assist migratory travellers by providing a dual-purpose lightweight jacket that doubles as a tent.
