The Japanese Moss House renovation and redesign by Nendo Studio, brings living elements into an old wooden house while simultaneously creating a bridge between the interior and exterior environments.
The project, consisting of a redesign of an existing house on the Shibuya River in Tokyo's Ebisu neighborhood, transforms and revitalizes an older building into an elegant, modern live-work space with the use of dry moss wall treatments spiraling throughout the house.
The moss pattern from the Shibuya River was used to tie together the house and connect existing spaces with freshly renovated areas, but also to create a visual link between the house’s interior environments and its exterior space.
“Most wallpaper imitates nature through a two-dimensional representation of it, and cladding the walls entirely in moss would simply have been too much, explain the architects of their design. “We wanted something in-between, so we applied the moss in a pattern that looked like wallpaper, creating an ambiguous texture that's neither artificial nor natural. The same pattern appears on the cable outlet, and on the doorframes and door handles of the office, further synthesizing the moss pattern with the space.”
