Researchers at Clemson University’s SEED project are working on a system to utilize recycled shipping containers as easy to assemble emergency housing. Made from steel, shipping containers have the benefit of being able to withstand hurricane & seismic activity.

"We are working to get shipping companies on board to donate their empty containers already in Haiti, and governments that have sent containers with goods for the relief effort and neighboring ports could also donate,” explains Martha Skinner from the SEED project in a Fast Company interview.

When shipping containers arrive to their relief destination, strategic holes can be cut to provide airflow and light in the 320sq.ft (29.7m2) space. The containers can also be easily modified to provide water catchments, roof top gardens, and recycled wooden pallets can be used to create bathing and cooking areas.
