Designer Mike Reyes has come up with an innovative solution for temporary emergency relief housing. Dubbed Rise, the Brazilian low-cost, modular housing structures are designed to be affixed to existing abandoned buildings or highrises.

Inspired by the bright vibrant famous Favela paintings of Rio de Janeiro, the prefabricated shelters would not only serve as emergency disaster relief housing, but would also serve to accommodate homeless individuals. Reyes hopes that the shelters would also operate as large-scale artistic canvases for the residents.
The project, aside from being low impact and made entirely from recycled materials, would also serve to create a community encouraging people to work together.

“Rise’s method of creating a community is like a parasite, they take ownership, re-purposing and aiding abandoned structures; providing resources that will help start future development,” explains the designer.
Each unit can also be outfitted with rooftop gardens, solar panels and a basic water purification system.
