Oprah's 40 Million Chickens

Oprah Winfrey and KFC might seem like an unlikely partnership, but the popular American talk show hostess has paired with the frequent PETA target – KFC – to give away two pieces of chicken to every American living in the USA.

Americans are able to download the free coupons and redeem them at local KFC branches to receive their two pieces of chicken, two side orders and a bun. The offer ends May 6th, 2009.

What does Oprah’s promotion of KFC mean for the chickens? If 80% of the 303 million Americans take advantage of the free two-piece chicken meal (assuming babies and vegetarians won’t take up the offer), and each hen provides 6 pieces of “grilled or fried chicken”, potentially more than 40 million chickens will die in Oprah’s KFC promotion.

Oprah's pro-KFC promotion is seen as an abrupt turnaround for the talk show hostess who recently received a Person of the Year 2008 award from PETA for her work to raise awareness about factory farming, including shows focusing on veal crates, battery hen cages, sow gestation crates, puppy mills and the benefits of a vegan diet.

Oprah’s promotion of KFC is, in fact, directly supporting factory farming conditions. KFC has long been in PETA’s crosshairs for their cruel treatment of poultry.

PETA’s website explains the rationale behind their Kentucky Fried Cruelty Campaign with, “KFC suppliers cram birds into huge waste-filled factories, breed and drug them to grow so large that they can’t even walk, and often break their wings and legs. At slaughter, the birds’ throats are slit and they are dropped into tanks of scalding-hot water—often while they are still conscious”.

There has been no official world on why Oprah and KFC teamed up for the promotion.
