Will Ferrell has come up with a humorous way to raise awareness and funds for the USA charity Cancer For College with a line of silly sunscreen products. Proceeds from the sunscreens, called Forbidden Fruit, Sexy Hot Tan and Sunstroke, go to Cancer For College, which in turn, provides scholarship funds for cancer survivors.
“We are proud to return 100% of the proceeds from sales of our new sunscreen products to the charity,” explains Ferrell.
Sounds great, right?
We now have breast cancer M&Ms, celebrity sunscreen and even candy-coated breast cancer fortune cookies, all in aid of raising awareness and funds for cancer research or cancer survivor programs. Yet with so many products commodifying cancer, why is it so few of them represent healthy choices.
When is the multi-billion dollar cancer machine going to start looking at cancer holistically and consider the toxic chemicals we use on our bodies, the pesticides, fertilizers and hormones in our foods and the increasingly toxic load of the environmental around us?
With no disrespect to Will Ferrell and with best wishes on a successful campaign, but maybe next time he could consider sponsoring an organic apple juice or other organic drinks, a BPA free stainless steel water bottle or maybe even running an anti-pesticide campaign. There is probably less money in these products but definitely more health mileage and less impact for the planet.
