Oprah Winfrey cares about puppies, just not chickens. The media mogul’s June edition of O Magazine features a picture of Orpah with a bunch of shelter puppies.
Inside the issue, Oprah describes her experience of adopting two shelter dogs from PAWS Chicago, the city's largest no-kill humane shelter. She also details how both of the puppies contacted parvovirus and one of the young dogs died.
Oprah’s decision to publicly adopt a shelter puppy has earned the talkshow queen a little leeway after receiving backlash for her recent pairing with, frequent PETA target, Kentucky Fried Chicken for a nation-wide promotional deal.
Oprah, unlike the Obama family, opted to rescue one of the 6-8 million abandoned dogs and cats in the USA. Each year, three to four million of these animals are euthanized because there are not enough homes for them, according to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
The Obama family has received considerable backlash for opting to take a Portuguese Water Dog, Bo, from a breeder as opposed to rescuing an animal from a shelter. Media outlets report that American breeders have been inundated with requests for Portuguese Water Dogs since Bo moved into the White House.
The June issue of O Magazine is now on newsstands.
