As much of the world’s media is abuzz with the sad news of Michael Jackson’s early demise, the eco world is remembering the pop icon for the environmental contribution of his UK hit – Earth Song.
Unfortunately for North Americans, Earth Song’s poignant video was never popular in the USA. However as Treehugger.com notes, Earth Song was more popular than Thriller or Billie Jean in the UK.
Released well ahead of the current level of environmental awareness, Earth Song covers themes of drought, extreme weather, deforestation, hunting, seal hunting, animal welfare and the health of the Amazon Rainforest.
At the time, Jackson explained why he wrote the song, “I was feeling so much pain and so much suffering of the plight of the Planet Earth… I think nature is trying so hard to compensate for man's mismanagement of the Earth. I think earth feels the pain, and she has wounds, and it's about some of the joys of the planet as well. But this is my chance to pretty much let people hear the voice of the planet. And this is Earth Song."
